We have extensive experience working with optical grade acrylic, polycarbonate, and adhesives so we are familiar with the challenges and requirements other shops struggle with. Combine that with our extensive knowledge of the materials and applications, our attention to detail, and our quick response and production lead times, and you can see why we have so many customers choosing to have us supply their finished parts.
WHY ASTRA
Why Choose Astra Products?
Certified Quality Systems
Astra Products maintains ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 automotive certifications to support consistent quality, process control, and documentation.
Tight Tolerances
Our team supports tight-tolerance plastic parts, optical components, panels, covers, and custom fabricated sheet products.
Quick Turnaround Times
With in-house cutting, routing, inspection, and finishing capabilities, Astra can help reduce lead times for prototypes, short runs, and repeat production.
Material Knowledge
We understand how acrylic, polycarbonate, optical plastics, coatings, and specialty sheet materials cut, machine, bond, finish, and perform in real-world applications.
Optical Inspection Capabilities
Programmable optical inspection equipment helps verify critical dimensions, profiles, and part features.
Flexible Production Volumes
Astra supports low- to high-volume projects, from small precision components to larger panels and repeat production runs.
Customer-Supplied or Astra-Supplied Materials
We can fabricate parts from Astra-supplied materials or customer-supplied materials when a specific sheet, coating, formulation, or approved source is required.
In-House Capabilities Plus Trusted Partners
When a project requires capabilities outside our facility, we can often support it through trusted fabrication and finishing partners.
Fabrication Capabilities
Laser Cutting
Fast, accurate cutting for 2D acrylic & sheet plastic parts.
Astra Products uses precision CNC laser cutting equipment to cut 2D profiles and features from acrylic and other sheet materials. Laser cutting is a good fit for flat parts, custom shapes, display components, protective panels, and other applications where clean, accurate cutting is required.
We can cut parts as small as 0.25″ (6mm) in diameter and sheets up to 4′ x 4′ (1210 x 1210mm). Our high-powered lasers can cut cast acrylic up to 1″ (25mm) thick and process thinner sheet materials efficiently.
Cast acrylic typically cuts well on the laser and produces a clean, semi-polished edge. Results may vary with other materials depending on the material type, thickness, and edge-finish requirements.
Because laser cutting is quick to set up and does not typically require special tooling or fixtures, many laser-cut jobs can be completed within days.
CNC Routing
Machining support for custom parts with pockets, bevels, countersinks, & other 2.5D features.
Astra Products uses 3-axis CNC routers for parts that require 2.5D features, including counterbores, countersinks, bevels, pockets, step cuts, and other machined details. CNC routing is also used for materials that do not laser cut well, such as polycarbonate.
We can machine small parts down to 0.25″ (6mm) and process sheets up to 4′ x 8′ (1210 x 2420mm). CNC routing is a good option for custom plastic parts, display panels, optical components, protective covers, and fabricated sheet products that require more than a simple 2D profile.
CNC routing requires more setup, programming, and fixturing than laser cutting. Lead times for CNC-routed parts are typically 3 to 5 weeks, depending on part complexity, material, and quantity.
Adhesive Application
Pressure-sensitive adhesive application to help finished parts integrate into assemblies.
Astra Products can apply pressure-sensitive adhesives with release liners to finished parts. Adhesives are typically applied around the perimeter of the part, but they can also be applied selectively based on the design and assembly requirements.
This allows the finished part to be installed by removing the release liner and placing the part directly into the customer’s assembly. Adhesive application can help reduce secondary handling, simplify installation, and improve consistency during production.
We typically work with double-sided adhesives from 0.002″ (0.05 mm) up to 0.040″ (1.0 mm) thick, based on customer specifications. Common adhesives include:
- 3M 9485PC
- 3M 9474LE
- 3M 4929
- 3M 4949
- 3M 4930
- 3M 467MP
- 3M 468MP
