High Scatter Optical Transmission Light Guides (HSOT)

Custom clear acrylic light guide sheets for edge-lit, see-through illumination.

CLAREX high scatter optical transmission (HSOT) light guide sheets are made custom by loading light scattering particles into clear cast acrylic sheets. When edge-lit, those particles help spread light throughout the material, creating a bright, illuminated appearance that can be adjusted to match your application’s specifications.

HSOT is ideal for see-through light guide applications, including assemblies positioned in front of displays such as E-Ink screens. It is also a strong fit for illuminated signage, especially when light output is needed from both sides of the panel. For more specialized uses, the material can be machined into custom shapes for illuminated indicators, gauge pointers, and other edge-lit components.

Note: CLAREX light guide panels are best suited for smaller display applications, up to approximately 24″ diagonal. Larger-format panels should be reviewed with Astra’s team to determine feasibility.

Benefits of HSOT Light Guides

Particle type and density can be adjusted for each application to achieve the desired brightness, diffusion, and visual effect.

HSOT provides a transparent light guide option for front-lit display assemblies and other applications where visibility through the material is important.

Light can be introduced from the edge of the sheet, supporting thinner assemblies where traditional backlighting may not be practical.

HSOT can support signage, light boxes, and display applications that need visible illumination from both sides of the panel.

HSOT material can be cut to size and machined into custom shapes for a wide range of illuminated components and assemblies.

Material formulation, sheet size, thickness, and fabrication can be reviewed based on the optical, dimensional, and performance needs of the application.

Common HSOT Applications

Formulated for edge-lit applications where controlled light scattering and custom illumination are required.

Used to distribute light through clear acrylic sheets in compact edge-lit assemblies.

A see-through option for front-lit, low-power display applications such as e-readers, shelf labels, and other reflective displays.

Suitable for smaller signage and light box applications that need light output from both sides.

Used in small panels, graphic overlays, and interface components that require controlled edge-lit illumination.

Can be cut and machined into pointers, indicators, markers, and other specialty illuminated parts.

HOW IT WORKS

How HSOT Light Guides Work

Light enters through the edges of the clear acrylic sheet and travels through the material. Embedded light-scattering particles redirect that light throughout the panel, creating an illuminated appearance while allowing the sheet to remain see-through. Particle type and density can be adjusted to achieve the desired light output and diffusion.
